Amazon is reportedly testing a biometric scanner for payments, according to the New York Post. Amazon hopes to roll out the system, codenamed "Orville," to select Whole Foods locations in the coming months.
It works like this: When you’re ready to pay, wave. A scanner uses computer vision and depth geometry to ID your hand’s shape and size. The system doesn’t require physical contact.
Orville’s reportedly “accurate to within one ten-thousandth of 1%,” but engineers want to get it to a millionth of 1% by launch. The transaction takes under 300 milliseconds, which is at least 10x faster than card-based terminals.
